Joseph A. Tatman

Corporate Secretary and Executive Principal Analyst

Dr. Tatman has over 35 years’ experience in the application, research and teaching of decision and risk analysis. Specializing in Bayesian networks in a broad array of applications, he trained and coached knowledge engineers on using Bayesian networks in the development of a software system for diagnosing US Army equipment. This work was named a finalist for the INFORMS Edelman Award, the premier practice award in the field of Operations Research. He took a lead role in developing a Bayesian network to inform acquisition decisions for satellite systems. He led development of a Bayesian network for WMD analysis that was mentioned in a report to Congress for its effectiveness as a collaboration tool. In DTRA’s Bio-Surveillance Ecosystem program, and the development of a Bayesian network anomaly detector that used massive data sets to predict and identify epidemic outbreaks. Dr. Tatman was a leader in inserting Bayesian network analysis into an automated planning system for a major government agency.

Dr. Tatman served in the U.S. Air Force for 15 years, that included teaching at the Air Force Institute of Technology and serving as an analyst at the Air Force Studies and Analysis Agency (now A-9 on the Air Staff). He led the development of IDI’s Bayesian network professional short courses. He is one of the founders of IDI.
